A pioneering early-stage biotechnology company, located in Oxfordshire, is seeking a Principal Scientist to join its growing Biology team. This innovative start-up is developing next-generation oligonucleotide-based therapeutics.

This is a rare opportunity to shape the scientific direction of a company from an early stage, contributing to both discovery and development of a novel class of drug candidates.

The Role

As Principal Scientist, you will lead the development and implementation of disease-relevant assays for the evaluation of novel oligonucleotide therapeutics. Working closely with the Head of Biology and external collaborators, you will play a critical role in translating early discoveries into preclinical proof-of-concept data.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead development of assays to assess protein up-regulation in disease-relevant cell and animal models.

  • Execute and oversee molecular biology experiments (e.g. qPCR, luciferase assays, western blot, ELISA).

  • Collaborate with contract research organisations (CROs) and scientific advisors to advance discovery programmes.

  • Evaluate new disease indications and help shape strategic direction toward preclinical milestones.

  • Maintain rigorous experimental documentation and contribute to internal data presentations and planning.

About You

Required qualifications and experience:

  • PhD in molecular or cell biology, biochemistry, or related field with 7+ years of relevant experience (industry preferred).

  • Deep technical expertise in protein quantification (e.g. western blot, ELISA, capillary systems).

  • Strong background in mammalian cell culture, nucleic acid transfection, and gene expression analysis.

  • Proven experience designing or managing in vivo rodent studies through CROs.

  • Excellent communication, organisational and team-working skills.

  • Must be able to work on-site at Oxford's Old Road Campus.

Desirable:

  • Experience with oligonucleotide-based therapeutic platforms.

  • Background in indication finding and disease target assessment.
